While North Dakotans are neighborly and nice most of the time…we are apparently rude, off putting and down right mean when it comes to being good customers.
According to a study conducted by Stella Connect, North Dakota ranks in the top 5 of “States with the most unfriendly customers”
Christopher Elliot wrote a piece on the subject and he joins It Takes Two with Amy and JJ to discuss the findings and why ND ended up in the top five (worth noting – South Dakota was #7)
“According to Stella Connect, here are the five unfriendliest states (the company rates only the contiguous states plus Washington, D.C.):
1. Washington, D.C. (91.82)
2. Nevada (91.87)
3. California (92.04)
4. Missouri (92.22)
5. North Dakota (92.42)
“With all the gridlock coming out of our nation’s capital, is it any wonder that customers there are seemingly more grouchy than elsewhere?” says Vlasto.
OK, the district’s number-one ranking might not come as a shocker, but Nevada? Missouri? And North Dakota? These states don’t have reputations for unfriendly customer behavior. Perhaps there’s some discontent elsewhere, too. Hard to know why, but it’s there — and it’s measurable. They have rude customers.”

So what is it? Expectations of higher quality goods? Do we need some sort of release and we’ve collectively chosen to take it out on tellers, checkers and salespeople? Whatever the reason – our listeners had plenty of excuses to suggest reasons why we are near the top of this list!
