Larry Magid, CBS News Tech Correspondent and writer at

gives an insider perspective on the idea of data privacy when it comes to developers, service providers and customers.
Your data and user habits aren’t worth much on the open market, but 1,000,000 consumers’ data is worth a LOT.
Republican Rep. Jim Kasper introduced a bill that was intended to give residents some backing when dealing with their personal data habits. That bill, after pressure from major tech firms pushed law makers, has been downgraded to a study before it can move forward.
Larry brings up some heavy ideas. For instance, if North Dakota comes out and regulates the sharing/selling of users’ data – companies like Facebook could simply decide to cease the use of Facebook in the state of North Dakota. Apparently we don’t have the muscle like a California or New York. Limiting availability would be the easy way to get around some of the individual state laws – but a federal law would be the major game changer.
You can also argue that these companies are private entities and you are agreeing to their terms of service before you even start using an app or website, so you have already given consent. Unfortunately, tech giants like Google or Facebook should almost be seen as utilities and regulated as such.
