The king of all things green, the lord of lilacs, the prince of pruning – the names go on and on – but we all know him as retired horticulturalist Dave Decock. Dave answers questions from listeners about their lawns, shrubs, gardens, berries, bushes, critters and just about anything that you can imagine.
In This Episode:
A caller needs help with her flower garden. There are mushrooms growing all over the place! Dave talks about what actually causes mushrooms to grow in areas and does some deep investigating. The area in question isn’t over a dead tree – so the thought might be that the spores were brought in on some rogue potting soil from a big box retailer.
More questions about trees. One listener has a maple with two leaders at the top – Dave says to remove now…if it has leafed out, otherwise wait so you don’t have so much sap running. Another listener wants to know what to do with the area below a black walnut tree. Could they grow anything? Dave thinks so! Try veggies that don’t require a lot of sunlight like cabbage or cauliflower.
It’s Memorial Day weekend and a lot of people will be heading out to purchase their flowers and get some work done in the lawn. As a reminder, look up your zone BEFORE you buy. Flowers, plants and trees all are labeled with what zone they thrive within – but stores still stock things that are meant for other zones. Don’t spend a fortune to find out everything is dying at the end of the season!
