BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO) – The State Historical Society of North Dakota is dusting off its collection of moon rocks. The lunar fragments were collected by NASA astronauts during the last mission to the moon.
Curator of Education Erik Holland says the lunar samples will be on display from July 16 to July 24. The fragments will be inside a special case with information about the mission.
Holland says the rocks are quite small. He describes them as larger than a grain of sand, but not as big as a marble.
The lunar samples were brought to earth during the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. NASA says the Apollo 17 crew collected 741 rock and soil samples, including a deep drill core that included material from 3 meters below the lunar surface.
It was the final mission of the Apollo program and the last mission in which humans walked on the moon.
