Tim Noteboom has spent a good amount of time in his life crawling through crawlspaces, squeezing into roof peaks and everywhere in between. He spent years working as a contractor remodeling homes and then used that knowledge in his profession as a home inspector.
Mr. Fix-It takes questions from listeners who need information on home maintenance or seeking out advice on protecting their house.

JJ has some shingles that seem to be peeling up, looks like the ice dam on his roof was pretty bad. Tim advises that there are some things to try before replacing the shingles outright. Roofing tar and a few other remedies are available at your local hardware store. If the shingles press back down, you are good to go. If they still seem to stretch up – look at replacing those shingles immediately. Prolonged water damage can cost THOUSANDS of dollars if left unfixed.
The subject of garage doors comes up. Older doors can still get new life in the form of fresh springs. If you’ve been exerting yourself to open a manual door, a quick switch of the springs could make it feel new. As for automatic openers – Tim doesn’t have an opinion either way as far as belt based or chain based openers, but notes that you should take the time to choose the right HP motor. Not too light or over the top.
Tim also talks about using technology to avoid the headache about matters related to sump pump problems. A sump pump that doesn’t work properly means water everywhere. His suggestion is to grab a smart water detector that notifies you when water shows up where it shouldn’t by sending a message to your smart phone. Anyone who hasn’t dealt with a failed sump pump or a basement full of water should knock on wood.
