The first question asked of Karen Berntson and Carston Melgaard when they arrived int eh KFGO studios – exactly what IS
Junior Achievement
?
They both smiled, you could tell they have fielded this question before. Karen Berntson, District Director of
Junior Achievement of the Upper Midwest
, talked about a hands on approach they provide to schools and groups to teach students as young as Kindergarten about the fundamentals of finance. Starting a business, how credit cards work and so much more. Setting up students to be smarter when they leave the nest and go out into the world.
It’s an odd thought – teaching Kindergartners about money. Heck, it’s an odd though to teach some high school seniors about it as well. But the topics are important and today, more than ever, the ability for students to understand and work in a world of changing economics.
“During the 2017-2018 school year, Junior Achievement of the Upper Midwest served 10,025 K-12 Fargo-Moorhead Area students. We partnered with nearly 500 local volunteers who donated 54,314 hours of their time and energy to offer local students the knowledge and skills to be successful in today’s world. The district office is located in the Xcel Energy building. Our
Fargo Advisory Board
is made up of business and community leaders who oversee the JA programs along with several committees that assist with monitoring growth and strategic direction.”– From the Junior Achievement website
