There is an old saying about going to the source when seeking information. IT2 does just that when they talk about ND House Bill 1256 with Adam Martin from the F5 project.
CHECK OUT THE F5 PROJECT VIA THEIR WEBSITE
HB 1256 regards sealing criminal records after certain requirements are met by those convicted of a felony. These requirements include serving time behind bars, completing parole and some additional years of upstanding behavior. After the records are sealed, the opportunity to live and work in ND communities greatly improve.
For example, if you had a felony on your background check – you might (and probably are) denied an apartment. You meet all the criteria, but the background check keeps you from that nice place in a nice building near your job. Oh yeah, let’s also assume that you’ve been denied employment because of a conviction that is more than a decade old.
HB 1256 allows convicted felons in the state of ND to have their records sealed. Essentially, it opens up an entire world for someone who has paid their debt to society. It’s a game changer.
Take it from Adam Martin – he’s a convicted felon. His hardships in life are what lead him to found the F5 Project and help others as they navigate a new world after getting out of jail or prison. By the way, HUGE difference between jail and prison – just ask Adam.
The bulk of the rest of the United States already has a rule like this on the books. Some call it expungement or expunction. North Dakota is now catching up thanks to thoughtful bi-partisan conversations and lawmaking like this.
