In April of 2017, Fargo City Commissioners passed “the Chicken Ordinance,” allowing residents to raise chickens within city limits.
Here’s how the numbers have stacked up:
In 2017: 5 permits issued
In 2018: 12 permits issued
In 2019 (as of March): 2 permits issued
Permits must be obtained for no more than $20, families can raise no more than 4 chickens, chicken coops cannot be built in front yard and chickens must be confined to the coop and cannot be allowed to run at large.
In this podcast: Fargo City Auditor Steve Sprague talks about the ordinance during It Takes 2. And, he says he has some personal experience with the issue: his neighbor had chickens for about 2 months before anyone ever knew it!
