On Saturday, March 2nd 2019, the American Legion in Moorhead, MN hosted folks from across the region. Some of them were champion chili chefs and others were first time hopefuls. The judges (which included Amy Iler and JJ Gordon) tasted 26 different chilis…and ended up with a three-way tie for 1st place. The rules dictated that a chili showdown would take place. Three bowls containing beans, beef, tomato and the secret ingredients were re-tasted by the panel of experienced chili connoisseurs.
As the dust settled, Trisha Steiner (a first time competitor) took home the honor at the 30th Annual Coors Light Chili Cook-Off presented by the beer pros at Bergseth Bros. Meat raffles, laughter and good friends packed the Moorhead Legion that afternoon. It took more than 4 hours to finish the judging and award the winners. Some of the attendees only see each other once a year at this annual contest of spice.
Trisha rang up IT2 for a chat about her top rated chili and she spilled the beans on some of her secrets. For starters, she uses pork instead of beef. The judges all noted an interesting flavor that no one could put their finger on right away. Was it BBQ sauce? Or Worstershire? Nope, it was barbacoa slow-cooker sauce. A hint of spice, garlic, cumin and chipotle – this sauce really set the taste apart from the rest of the chilis. Trisha also notes that the chili she won at Floyd’s Bar with probably doesn’t taste exactly the same – but nevertheless, her kids enjoyed testing all of the batches until the champion was found!
