Slow down! Don’t follow so close! Be prepared for winter driving conditions. We’ve all heard these warnings – but we don’t seem to be following them. Captain Bryan Niewind of the North Dakota Highway Patrol says that we’ve seen roughly 100+ more crashes on the roads this year, thus far, compared to last year.
The Highway Patrol is also seeing a lot of motorists who are spinning out and ending up in the ditch. A lot of winter driving emergencies could be decreased by individuals slowing down – Captain Neiwind even shares a tip about how modern vehicles react in uncontrolled situations – and allowing larger gaps in following.
It is inevitable that something will occur and when it does, it’s important to remember to have a winter survival kit in your car. Gloves, boots, food, jumper cables and more are INCREDIBLY important to have in your vehicles. Especially in our neck of the woods where long gaps between towns could mean extended time in a disabled vehicle.
