The National Weather Service will soon launch a new weather prediction model that has been heavily criticized by meteorologists as unreliable. The Weather Service says the new system is tentatively set to become the primary U.S. forecasting model on March 20, but experts note that this model has incorrectly predicted snowfall, noting it “runs cold”.
IN THIS PODCAST: Tom Szymanski explains why the model seems flawed, why the launch date will no longer be March 20th, and more about how he uses these – and European models – to forecast.
An in depth look at weather forecasting.
And, Szymanski says we are entering “HISTORIC” proportions with these cold temperatures.
We have not been above 32 degrees since January 7th. If we have 11 more days of 32 degrees or below, we will enter the top 10 longest runs in history. (And, Tom says that’s a good bet to make.) That will have been 54 STRAIGHT days of under 32 degrees.
If we really want to go for the record breaker, we’ll need to make it 77 days.
(Please don’t wish us luck…)
Additionally, Szymanski says we can expect more snow late tonight into tomorrow. He’s expecting an accumulation of 1-3 inches.
Total snowfall so far (as of 2/19/19): 39.4 inches, which is only about 4 inches above average.
