I love steak. It doesn’t matter the cut. Ribeye, New York Strip, Porterhouse, Top Sirloin or any other variety. I am also a fan of simple seasonings. Salt and pepper on my beef, that’s it.
I love to try house specialty steak sauces when I am dining around the country. In Napa Valley, I enjoyed the flavor of red wine reductions. On a recent trip to New York, peppercorn sauces were all the rage. I have even tried “Jim’s Secret Sauce” which was brought to me in an old ketchup bottle with masking tape displaying the name and the weirdest orange goo you’ve ever seen. It tasted very tart. After more than a decade, I have settled on my personal favorite steak sauce. It’s the house sauce from a steak house chain that has a handful of restaurants across the country.

I first stopped into one of these establishments along the Chicago river in downtown Chi-town late one night. I was craving a steak and they were open late. The meal was amazing The side dishes were unbelievable – but the bone-in ribeye was one of the best. I took the bone home and made some amazing beef soup – but that is a story for another time.
The steak was tender and delicious, it didn’t require a steak sauce…but my waiter offered me a taste of their homemade sauce. Oh…my…lord… This sauce was rich and full. The sauce is chunky – which I like. You’ll taste notes of horseradish, onion, a vinegar kick and so much more. This sauce complimented everything on my plate. I even put it on my asparagus!
At the end of my meal, I asked my waiter if they sold bottles of this stuff. He told me they did and he wrapped one up (plus snuck me the half finished bottle I was using at the table).
When I lived in Chicago, it was easy to find. After moving back to Fargo, ND, that was no longer the case.
Good news, they ship the sauce across the country. The price tag is up there and the shipping will make you cringe, but if you split this with three people (three bottles come minimum) the price point is much more palatable.
ORDER SOME STEAK SAUCE YOURSELF!
This stuff is good. Not just a cover up for a bad chef, but a flavor enhancer. The taste of beef is perfect…but a dab of Smith & Wollensky’s Steak Sauce will dial that meal up to 11.
Note – This is NOT a paid for endorsement. I am just a guy who finally found the perfect steak sauce and I want to shout it from the mountain tops.
