Imagine a generation of students who don’t know how to balance a check book…because they don’t use checks anymore. That is about the beginning, middle and end of required cirriculum in today’s standards – but Senator Steve Cwodzinski would like to see that change.

He has introduced a bill that would add a required course to graduate from a public high school in Minnesota. That class would be about Personal Finance. Sending the next generation into the world with an understanding of how a credit score works and evolves, the importance of interest rates, how to establish a budget and a real world mentality for how student loan debt can follow a person for life.
Sometimes the parents assume the children are already being taught this skill and the teachers assume the parents are pulling their weight in sitting kids down and explaining the cold hard facts. Unfortunately, this leaves a mega sized crack that children fall between which leads to credit card debt – something that the credit card companies are more than happy to put into the hands of a recently turned 18 year old.
