Don Martin with FM Ambulance knows that frostbite is a common ailment in our neck of the woods – but with the cold temperatures we are experiencing right now, it never hurts to get a refresher course.
Don mentions that covering exposed skin is the #1 way to AVOID frostbite. Cheeks, fingers, toes, ears, etc. are all areas where frostbite can strike. Keeping them covered with a scarf or good gloves are important to keep the elements at bay and your circulation pumping.
If you have frostbite and feel the stinging in your extremities – sometimes like you are being stabbed with tiny knives – go inside and use warm (NOT HOT) water to help bring life back to the area. If the pain persists or you lose use of those parts, consult a doctor immediately.
It’s cold out there. Stay warm and keep yourself safe. Same thing goes for your four legged friends too! ALL ANIMALS CAN GET FROSTBITE!
