Susan Quinnell, Architectural Historian, from the State Historical Society of North Dakota, joins It Takes 2 with Amy & JJ to discuss the urban legend.
Quinnell says that before we asked, she had accepted this as fact as well… however, after doing her research, there is not an actual law or ordinance requiring buildings in North Dakota to be shorter than the Capitol in Bismarck, North Dakota.
The North Dakota State Captiol is the tallest building at 242 feet tall and was built in 1934, after a fire had destroyed the original building.
She speculates we make the assumption because cities, like Bismarck, have set building height requirements to around 130 feet, without a special permit. (Which happened in the 20’s, before the Capitol was built.)
