Space heaters have changed a lot over the last 20 years. Gone are the days of only seeing the “milk house” style heaters to a world where the heating elements have changes, infrared technology has been massive and safety comes first in all designs.
Here are some simple “No’s” you should remember
1. Minimum of 3 feet around the heater from drapes, furniture and anything else that might start on fire.
2. Extension cords must be correctly rated for the amount of power that is required by a space heater. Check your cord and check your heater to make sure you aren’t asking too much of an extension cord.
3. Older heaters may not have safety features like a tip switch, that will turn off a heater if it falls over, so retire those old heaters and get a newer space heater with improved safety options.
4. If you are running multiple heaters all over your house, look into the cost of turning up the furnace a few degrees versus running heaters non-stop. Over half of home fatalities from fire start with heat units. Rather than running numerous heaters and risking safety, see if you could just close certain vents and force air into other areas.
5. UNPLUG THE HEATER when not in use.
