On Friday we said goodbye to Mike “the Viking Fanatic” Trom and in a day and age where we emphasis a “celebration of life” at funerals, I think Mike’s friends and family lived up to that and more. His love for sports, especially the Vikings was shown with attendees wearing Minnesota Vikings gear and jerseys and the Skol Vikings fight song wrapping up the service as the postlude music.
A nice touch was former Minnesota Viking and Concordia Cobber football coach/player Jim Christopherson showing up wearing his 1961 travel sport coat that players were required to wear on the road in the in the organization’s inagural year. Christopherson was impressive being able to fit into that coat and it was a great gesture for him to show up, and both Mike’s wife Amy and mother Marlene were touched that a real Viking player was there to celebrate Mike’s life.
Mike has been an important person in my life, especially for my radio career. He always provided entertainment with calls to my show about the Vikings or a variety of topics in the last 22 plus years that I have been on the radio and my shows from here on out won’t be as good without him. He was a fixture to my show and my life, and I will truly miss him. I only hope now that he has the best seat in the house for Vikings games, he can in spirit push them to the top to finally get that Super Bowl championship. He deserves it!
