It Takes 2 welcomes Dave Decock, hosting of the longest running segment on KFGO – Plant Talk, to answer listener’s questions about transplanting trees, the reason why leaves may be turning brown or yellow early and how late in the season a person can pick rhubarb.
How late in the season can you pick rhubarb? Dave answers this question by dispelling some old wife’s tales about not picking rhubarb after a frost. It’s still fine to pick and eat, even after a frost. He has known years where he is picking rhubarb well into October!
Gene from Barnesville was a on a previous episode and he sent in some photos of his onions. He says that he gets onions this big and beautiful by keeping the soil away from the bulb as it is growing. Makes sense to us and the proof is in the, well, onion!
You can also get some information on soil quality as Dave explains the needs of a certain breed of Maple. It requires nutrients that are not native to our soil or could be effected by a very concentrated patch of salty soil. In either case, he suggest inviting out your local county agent to take a professional look and give you some onsite advice!
Dave is in the studio every Thursday during the growing season from 1pm to 2pm – you can call 701-237-5948 or text in at 35270.
