Daycare, especially quality and convenient daycare, is a challenge for a lot of parents. To add some extra syrup to this sticky situation, imagine what it must be like for rural communities. IT2 talks with an Enderlin resident about what her city did when faced with a lack of daycare options.
Enderlin’s situation isn’t unique. They had two in-home daycare centers and one licensed center, but when parents received a letter saying that one of the in-home centers would be closing – they were faced with an all too common question “What are we going to do?” The City of Enderlin decided to step up and start the process of opening a community run daycare.
Easy, right? Wrong. There are numerous other towns across the state of North Dakota that have opened community daycares, but the regulations change town to town or county to county. The blueprint in one community may not work in another or the regulations that one township face might be drastically different from a similar sized community across the county line.
The City of Enderlin and its community members (including one that donated space in his basement) dug into research, zoning and laws and ended up with a daycare that is non-profit, community run and able to serve the citizens.
