A story from Sargent County and a potentially loose 6-7 foot python spurred a conversation between It Takes 2 hosts Amy Iler and JJ Gordon. Why do people keep snakes as pets? Dr. Derine Winning from Valley Vet in Fargo, ND gives us some solid reasons why snakes make fine house pets.
Snakes can be great pets if you take time to understand their needs. Our climate is not their native environment, so you will need to research the ins and outs of snake ownership. Maintaining a hot and humid climate in their living space is essential as well as bringing them in for check ups. Scale disease and diet are also worrisome, but treatable.
In Sargent County, ND, the owner of a 6-7 foot python has reported that the animal got loose from its cage and has not been seen. This report was passed on to the Sargent County Sheriff’s office and they have advised residents to not approach the snake if they spot it, just call 911. Dr. Winning states that a snake of this size, while not venomous, can still be dangerous.
