Del Monte Vegetables and the Center for Disease Control are attempting to figure out how more than 200 people were infected with an intestinal parasite after eating a prepackaged veggie tray found at convenience stores in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa.
Julie Garden-Robinson, from NDSU Extension, shares the common causes of Cyclosporiosis and how mishandling food or using improper irrigation techniques can lead to outbreaks such as this.
Cyclosporiosis is not usually life threatening, but should still be taken seriously. According to the Food and Drug Administration, symptoms of cyclosporiasis include severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, and fatigue.
The veggie trays in question have a “best enjoyed by” date of June 17th – but check your refrigerators at home and if you suspect that your veggie tray may be part of the recall, dispose of it immediately.
