It’s a bold idea. Allowing 16 year olds to vote in elections with the hope that it kick starts a lifelong love of voting. That is the idea behind a piece of legislation being worked on by Representative Marvin Nelson.

Mr. Nelson believes that if we allow younger citizens of North Dakota to vote in elections BEFORE they step out of high school, you will ignite flame that will get them to vote consistently before they own a home, have a family or even decide where they will set down roots.

He’s not the first person to suggest that voting before the age of 18. In fact, many people who have interacted with teenagers in the last few years were surprised at how engaged the youth of our state are with local and national politics. Those individuals have started a grass roots effort to mimic what Scotland accomplished in 2014 when they began allowing 16 year olds to vote.
