On this Memorial Day, Arlington National Cemetery is facing a dilemma: it’s running out of room.
The cemetery holds more than 7,000 burials a year, or about 30 a day.
And with aging veterans and on-going conflicts, Arlington National Cemetery is running out of room and could be completely out of room by 2043 (in twenty-five years).
After Arlington’s first survey of the public last year (with over 27,000 respondents), over 90% felt that something should be done to keep Arlington an active burial cemetery well into the future.
So, it’s considering restrictions on who can be buried there – for example: retired veterans, those who received high honors, like the Purple Heart or Medal of Valor, those killed in action.
And, they are again asking the public for input on which veterans should get priority.

Anyone can take the survey and, with your help, Arlington is hopeful they can stay open and honor the next generations.
