Amy Iler and JJ Gordon get the privilege of interviewing folks from across the globe. Every now and then, they get to interview someone from another time. Karl Schmidt is a tinsmith. A job that has all but disappeared, even though it this artisan profession was extremely popular…before 1920…
Karl uses era appropriate tools, wears era appropriate clothing (made by his wife) and makes items you might remember from your grandparents home. Beautiful pieces that are as much art as functional memories of a bygone time.

Here are a collection of Karl’s pieces. Handmade with a description of each piece.
The group of four pierced tin lanterns are based on early 19th century originals. I do all of the piercing by hand with lampmaker’s chisels and a hammer. Each lantern has more than 650 piercings.
The group of 10 small cups are whiskey drams. They stand only two inches tall. This was also a bespoke order from a customer who wanted me to reproduce an antique whiskey dram cup.
