“Paul Vogel of Fargo didn’t give up in his quest to find those responsible for cutting down and stealing a huge Colorado blue spruce tree in late Nov. and his efforts paid off.
Suspects have been identified and have admitted to the theft and are likely to face charges. For Vogel, the theft was all about losing a tree he planted with his late father more than 20 years ago on the family farmstead on Cass County 31, just north of the city. Understanding the case was not a top priority for authorities, Vogel did some legwork on his own.
Acting on what he calls a “hunch”, he spotted what he believed were pieces of the 18 ft. tree in the back of a pickup and followed the vehicle to a dump-off point along the Red River in north Fargo last month where he recovered the pieces, one with marks of a Christmas tree stand.
An NDSU expert compared the tree rings on the pieces to the stump left behind at the farm and there appeared to be a match. He passed his information along to investigators and follow-up by the Cass County Sheriff’s office led to the suspects. Vogel says never in his “wildest dreams” did he ever believe the suspects would be tracked down.”
