Welcome to Valentine’s Day. The roses cost you $40, the dinner is over $75 and you still haven’t figured out what to do for entertainment. Save your cash by using something you are already paying for – STREAMING SERVICES! Here are some options for those of you looking for a romantic comedy to watch with your sweetheart.
ON NETFLIX
There are several options, it seems like they struck a deal with Lifetime for a few of their stock chick flicks. Here are my favorites that are more film than movie of the week.
Can’t Buy Me Love (1987)
Classic 80’s clothes, music and love. The nerds and the preps mix together and you get one of the breakout roles from a young Patrick Dempsey. Fun, sweet and I guarantee that you will want to dig out a telescope by the end of this one!
No Reservations (2007)
If you are planning on making dinner – or a move 😉 – tonight, you should consider checking out this rom-com about a professional chef who inherits a kid and must find a way to make things work out between her personal life, her professional life and her love life. Just a wonderful movie that will definitely make you hungry…for love. I am gonna get letters about that. It might be a bit too cheesy!
Hello, My Name is Doris (2015)
The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
Full disclosure, I do NOT like this movie. I think that it missed the mark in transitioning a Broadway musical to the big screen. That being said, I know quite a few people who want to include these things – a musical, a historical romance and Gerard Butler. This appeases all three. The best number, in my humble opinion, is Masquerade!

The Big Sick (2017)
After Kumail breaks up with Emily, you would think the classic rom com trope would take place with him trying to get her back – you are wrong! She goes into a coma! So you spend most of the movie with Kumail attempting to be supportive to her parents, realizing his mistake and hoping that she gets better. The best thing I can say about this real life inspired story – it’s FRESH! It’s unlike anything I have ever seen in recent years. Just top notch story telling. Very funny performances from the likes of Ray Romano, Holly Hunter and the main star, Kumail Nanjiani. It’s nominated for Academy Awards!
