IN THIS PODCAST: Fargo Activist Joe Burgum joins IT2 to talk about liquor licenses in Fargo.
This discussion was spurred by a story reported by KFGO News:
Fargo commissioners decide liquor license decision by pulling name out of a hat
FARGO (KFGO) – – In an unusual move, Fargo City Commissioners had a drawing Monday night to determine which business would get the only available Class Z liquor license. The drawing is required if there are more applicants than licenses available.
Fargo now has 8 such licenses, determined on population. Each license costs $105,000. Both District 64 on Broadway and Cowboy Jacks on 4th Street North applied. District 64 won the drawing. City Commissioner Tony Gehrig says limiting the number of licenses is unfair. He introducted a motion to add two additional Class Z licenses.
That motion was withdrawn when City Attorney Erik Johnson told commissioners it would be illegal to approve two additional licenses without first changing the ordinance so commissioners agreed to pick one recipient.
Commissioners did not rule out considering an additional license for “Cowboy Jack’s”, which will take additional time to go through the city process
