Add caramel and apples to the list of things you forgot tasted marvelous together. Put it between popcorn and M & M’s and sausage and maple syrup.
Dipping apples in caramel is great fun, but it’s tedious and, let’s not kid ourselves, they are awkward to eat and children just lick the caramel off the outside and everything is a sticky mess. And I do mean everything.
I decided it was a better use of my time and talent to find an easy, no fuss way to meld together caramel and apples. Obviously, buying apples and a tub of caramel dip is the easiest route, but I wanted something that presented itself a little better and the Caramel Apple Nacho was born.
Caramel Apple Nachos are ridiculously easy to make.
I cut two Granny Smith apples into very thin slices, then patted them dry before drizzling them with caramel sauce and topped them with mini chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, and a sprinkling of colored sugar. Other topping ideas are Heath bits, butterscotch chips, white chocolate chips, chocolate sauce, or M & M’s. The sky is the limit.
For my caramel, I melted about 12 Kraft caramels with a teaspoon of water in the microwave. Jarred caramel sauce and even caramel dip would also work.
It’s all in the presentation.
Well, maybe not. I’m a writer, not a food stylist.
My family of five sat around this plate of caramel apple nachos for about 4 minutes before they were completely gone and the caramel licked from the plate. I can’t wait to whip them up on Halloween night and watch them disappear again!
