NEW ROCKFORD, N.D. (KFGO) – Firefighters responded to a BNSF locomotive on fire Monday morning.
According to the fire department, the westbound train was approximately 15 minutes outside of the city limits when the fire started. Because of challenging rural travel conditions in getting firefighters to the location, the engineer decided it was best to meet the fire department in New Rockford.
Before the train arrived, officials contacted BNSF’s emergency response center and determined there was no hazardous or flammable material on the train. All cars were loaded with sand.
Once stopped at a city crossing, smoke was visible but no flames were seen inside the engine. CO2 fire extinguishers were used to control and cool the fire. Damage was contained to the locomotive engine compartment.
It appears a mechanical failure was the cause. There were no injuries.
