OSAKIS, Minn. (KFGO) — Four hunters, including two children, were rescued from Bird Lake early Saturday morning after their duck hunting boat capsized.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 6:08 a.m. reporting the overturned boat. Responders arrived to find two adults and two children clinging to the boat. They were struggling to stay afloat because their waders had filled with water.
The group, identified as Travis Hendrickson, 39, and Jessica Brewer, 35, along with two children, were pulled to safety by deputies. All four were treated at the scene for hypothermia.
None of the hunters were wearing life jackets, and the boat did not have enough life vests on board. The Sheriff’s Office is using this incident as a reminder for everyone to wear life jackets or have them readily available, especially when out on the water.
The Alexandria Police Department, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Osakis First Responders, and North Ambulance assisted in the rescue.
