ST. PAUL – Senator Ron Latz of St. Louis Park plans to sponsor a bill at the next session requiring Minnesota law enforcement to trace guns used in crimes and share that information.
Latz says police in Minneapolis and St. Paul are currently using the e-Trace system, but not all of the agencies are and he says when they do, a fraction of the agencies are agreeing to share data and the results of the trace.
He says that means every agency that’s seeking a trace is being hampered and quick results.
Data show nearly 40 percent of law enforcement agencies do not use the e-Trace system, and only 13 percent of them share the info.
Latz says he was surprised to learn officers are not required to trace guns used in crimes in Minnesota.
