ST. PAUL, Minn. – The spring wildfire season is getting an early start across Minnesota.
The Department of Natural Resource’s Travis Verdegan says now is the time for property owners to check any brush piles they burned over winter.
“We have documented examples of brush piles that have continued to burn. They may have been burnt in January in the middle of winter, and they pop up in the middle of April,” Verdegan says.
Fire crews across the state have already responded to dozens of wildfires around Minnesota.
“Really, the message for folks this year would be timely with the conditions we saw over winter – go check the piles that you burnt over winter,” Verdegan says. “I wouldn’t recommend people actually walking over them barefoot, but that is the type of thoroughness that we would want to be able to do.”
Verdegan also encourages Minnesotans to follow any posted burning bans in their area. He says over the last 10 years, there has been an average of 1,186 wildfires per year.
