BIG TOAD LAKE, Minn. (KFGO) – A man died after the ATV he was riding broke through the ice and overturned in Big Toad Lake about 18 miles east of Detroit Lakes.
According to the Becker County Sheriff’s Office, the man left his home on Big Toad Lake Friday afternoon to go ice fishing, but didn’t return. After several hours, when the man didn’t answer calls or messages, his wife called the man’s brother to help find him.
When the man’s brother found a crack in the ice and open water, the man’s wife called the Sheriff’s Office.
The Becker County Sheriff’s Office, Wolf Lake Fire, and Detroit Lakes Fire responded with personal floatation devices and an airboat.
The man and his ATV were found shortly before 3:30 a.m. Saturday in about four to five feet of water. He died at the scene.
The man’s identity is being withheld until family is notified.
I’m so sorry this happened to his family and friends
