ST. PAUL, MINN – The world premiere is Saturday at Saint Paul’s History Theatre of “I Am Betty,” a musical about Betty Crocker, the fictitious but still legendary marketing creation of Minnesota-based General Mills.
Cast member Anna Hashizume says the play highlights women’s changing roles over 100 years “without necessarily making any judgment or one-sided comment”.
In one scene, women rights activist Betty Friedan has words with Barbara Jo Taylor, a black woman starting work at Betty Crocker Test Kitchen. Friedan says, “This white woman saying, why are you going to work at a place that is perpetuating a stereotype of what women should be? And Barbara Jo is saying, look, some women want to be homemakers and they should have the right to choose.”
“I Am Betty” runs through December 23rd at the History Theatre in Saint Paul.
