LANCASTER, Minn. (KFGO) – A Canadian Pacific Railway freight train derailed along U.S. Highway 59 near Lancaster in northwestern Minnesota Wednesday around 4 p.m.
Some of the rail cars were carrying hazardous materials, but Canadian Pacific Railway said there no leaks. No injuries were reported.
Kittson County Sheriff Matt Vig tells KFGO News, “It’s quite a mess.” He said 25 freight cars located approximately 90 cars back from the engine derailed. He says a large crew is working to clean up the wreckage and is making good progress.
Highway 59 is closed from Lancaster to Lake Bronson, a distance of about 11 miles and detour routes have been set up.
Wed. night, Gov. Tim Walz said state officials were working with local emergency managers on the train derailment and that “experts were on the way to survey the site and make sure the community has everything they need.”
