MINNEAPOLIS – A Minnesota man rushing to sneak in a final fishing expedition before the freeze on one of the state’s largest lakes appears to have broken a 64-year-old state record.
Nolan Sprengeler, of Plymouth, landed a muskie on Lake Mille Lacs Monday night that tipped the scales at 55 pounds, 14.8 ounces.
It took until Tuesday for Sprengeler to get the fish weighed on a certified scale, which he was able to do at a UPS store in Golden Valley.
Sprengeler said bringing in the massive fish to the UPS store was “so ridiculous…so outrageous,” while other customers looked on.
Sprengeler said that a friend and a UPS employee served as official witnesses so that the measurements can be certified and the fish can be declared a Minnesota record.
Sprengeler wanted to release the fish, but he says the muskie was hooked too deep. Now, a taxidermist from Wisconsin who specializes in muskie mounts will preserve the fish.
The Minnesota DNR will have to certify the catch as a state record, which would break the previous record of 54 pounds set in 1957.
