FARGO, ND – The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks fell to the Kansas City Monarchs 8-4 in game 1 of the American Association Championship Friday evening.
The T-Bones jumped onto the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Ryan Grotjohn hit a 2-run home run to take a 2-0 lead. Darnell Sweeney followed that with a solo shot over the right field wall to take a 3-0 lead.
The RedHawks answered in the home half of the first inning when Leo Pina drove in Correlle Prime to cut the Monarchs lead to 3-1. Pina would score on a Dylan Kelly RBI single to make it 3-2 Kansas City.
Kelly drove in Pina and Jordan George in the bottom of the third inning to give the RedHawks a 4-3 lead.
Kansas City got the offense going again in top of the fifth inning starting with Casey Gillaspie driving in Sweeney to tie the game at 4-4. Colin Willis knocked in Gabriel Guerrero to take a 5-4 lead. Gillaspie scored on a wild pitch extending the lead to 6-4.
The Monarchs added 2 runs in the top of the sixth inning to take an 8-4 advantage.
The RedHawks and Monarchs will be back in action Saturday night, Joel Morgan will have the call, pregame at 6:10 p.m. first pitch 6:30 p.m. on 740 The Fan and 107.3FM.
