FERGUS FALLS, MINN. – Three people were arrested in Fergus Falls after fleeing police in a stolen car and then colliding with another vehicle, critically injuring that driver.
Police were notified Tuesday morning that a car stolen in Fargo was being tracked and was located in the downtown area of Fergus Falls. Attempts to stop the car by police and an Otter Tail County deputy failed. The officers did not pursue the car.
A short time later, calls came in of a collision at the intersection of Pebble Lake Road and Highway 210. Witnesses reported the car was speeding, recklessly passing other vehicles, then ran a red light and struck a pickup. The impact pushed both vehicles into a ditch. The three people in the stolen vehicle and the pickup driver were taken to the Fergus Falls hospital.
The pickup driver, Eric Pierskalla, 61, of Champlin, Minnesota was later air-lifted to a Fargo hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Those in the car were arrested after being released from the hospital. The driver, 36-year old Devin Knox of Campbell, Minnesota, is charged with criminal vehicular operation. The two passengers were wanted on warrants. for assaulting a police officer and motor vehicle theft.
Police say controlled substances appear to have been a factor in the crash.
