FARGO, N.D. (KFGO – A flood buy-out house near the Red River in Fargo was gutted by fire. Firefighters responded shortly after midnight Wednesday to 3680 River Drive South.
Fire Captain Ryan Biergutz says the blaze was called in as a grass fire after somebody saw flames through trees that surround the house. Strong winds were also whipping embers around. He says the abandoned house was fully involved with flames going through the roof. The fire attack was all defensive as it was too dangerous to go inside the house. The cause is under investigation.
The house was ready for removal. Heavy construction equipment was parked nearby. There’s no indication of what started the fire.
Biergutz says the neighborhood is familiar. Firefighters were among those who spent a lot of time there, working to save homes from Red River flooding in the spring of 2009. The area along River Shore Drive is now protected by a large, permanent levee.
