BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO) – Governor Doug Burgum declared a statewide drought disaster on Thursday as 70% of North Dakota is in extreme drought, up from 47% last week with the remainder of the state in severe or moderate drought.
Burgum said for the second time in five years, state ranchers are facing widespread, extremely dry conditions that threaten their herds and livelihoods.
The governor said as part of the whole-of-government approach to natural disasters, he and North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring have reactivated the Drought Disaster Livestock Water Supply Project Assistance Program.
It provides eligible livestock producers with 50% cost-share assistance. That covers connections to rural water systems, new water wells, and several other sources to help livestock producers who face water shortages.
