FARGO, N.D (KFGO) – There are still no answers on why thousands of monarch butterflies died as a result of mosquito control aerial spraying in Fargo-Moorhead several weeks ago. The issue was discussed at Tuesday night’s Fargo city commission meeting.
Ben Dow, Fargo Public Works Director works closely with Cass County Vector Control on mosquito control, He says what happened was “horrible” and they are looking into everything possible to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
Vector Control Director Ben Prather said Vector Control did nothing different the night the aerial spraying was done. He told city commissioners there is a lot of attention focused on what happened. He says it’s not just a Cass County issue.
City Commissioner John Strand asked for further discussion on alternatives and Prather said he’s open to an open house to talk about the concerns.
The aerial spraying was conducted at a time when the FM metro was seeing one of the highest levels of mosquitoes that carry the West Nile Virus.
