In mid April, MSUM announced that it would need to cut programs to help shore up the $6 million dictated by the budget. Jobs, departments and majors were all included in an announcement that saddened and shocked alumni as well as community members. One particular program, Theater, has caused a wave amounting to more than 2,700 signatures and numerous letters to administration. Not to sound too corny, but it reminds me of “One Day More” from the musical Les Miserables! Read KFGO’s coverage of the announcement here.
“Minnesota State University Moorhead is facing some budget concerns and their administration has proposed eliminating 66 positions and 10 majors/programs. One of the programs they have proposed to eliminate is the entire MSUM Theatre and the Theatre Department, 3 faculty positions and one staff position, productions, and Straw Hat Players.”

Danya Del Val, President and CEO of The Arts Partnership, joins It Takes Two with Amy & JJ to talk about the impact that the MSUM Theater Program has had on the region as well as the ever growing need to support arts related programming.
There is not a magic wand to fix this situation and it certainly was a tough choice for MSUM administrators to make, but the online swell of support from students, alumni and community members could make a difference.
Possible ways to ensure that this program goes on could be the establishment of endowment funds, alumni support or finding ways to grow the amount of incoming students who plan to declare a major in Theater.
