Deer Lottery Held, Antlerless Licenses Remain
North Dakota’s deer gun lottery has been held and individual results are available online at the state Game and Fish Department’s website, gf.nd.gov. Successful applicants will receive their license in the mail in mid-July.
The first lottery application process – deer gun, muzzleloader, youth and landowner – had more than 92,000 applicants. Nearly 70 percent of the applications were submitted online.
Approximately 31,000 antlerless deer gun licenses remain. Unsuccessful resident applicants in the first drawing will be mailed a second lottery application. Resident and nonresident hunters who have not yet applied, or who want additional licenses, must submit a third lottery application. The deadline for submitting applications is July 28. The second lottery will take place immediately prior to the third.
The third lottery application will be available July 7 online at the Game and Fish website. Paper applications for download and from license vendors will be available mid-July.
Additional concurrent season doe licenses can be used during the archery season with a bow; the deer gun season with a bow, rifle, or muzzleloader; or during the muzzleloader season with a muzzleloader. These licenses must be used for antlerless deer only, and hunters must stay in the unit to which the license is assigned.
In addition, youth deer license hunters ages 14 and 15 may purchase additional concurrent season doe licenses to use during the youth season.

Creel Survey Being Conducted on Red River

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department has contracted with a private consulting firm to conduct a creel survey on the Red River. A similar creel was last conducted in 2001 by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Clerks will conduct angler interviews at various sites throughout spring, summer and fall. Anglers are asked to cooperate and answer questions thoroughly, as interviews take only a few minutes. Information obtained is extremely important and kept confidential.

Creel survey information is useful in assessing angler demographics, harvest and catch rates, catch-and-release information, and angling effort.

The information collected during this survey will be used to help manage recreational fishing opportunities on the Red River.

First Fish Certificate Captures Moment

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is reminding parents to capture their little angler’s first catch on a specially designed First Fish certificate.

First Fish has no qualifying weights or measurements. The only requirement is the successful landing of a North Dakota fish. Certificates are available to all who request them, and have ample room for all the important information, such as name, age, lake and a short fish story, plus a blank space for a photograph big enough to contain the smile of the happiest little angler.

Free certificates are available by contacting the Game and Fish Department at (701) 328-6300, or send an e-mail to ndgf@nd.gov.

July 15 fishing report frm Devils Lake and Mark Bry

It is a bad time to be a walleye and a good time to be a walleye fisherman on Devils Lake. The walleyes are on the bite and all presentations seem to be working. Our best luck has been working weed lines in that 8-14 ft of water. There are still some shorelines where pitching cranks will produce; however, weeds are starting to really grow and you need to know where the pockets exist on each shoreline where you can pitch effectively. Live bait rigs such as bouncers and spinners have been good. We have been doing a lot of vertical jigging and pitching jigs along weeds, rock piles, and drop-offs. Overall, fish whatever way is most comfortable for you.

White bass are a bit deeper as well. Once you find them, be prepared to do a lot of catching. They seem to be a bit more scattered of late, but we have also been spending more time catching eyes and not going after the bass. Northerns are being caught every now and then with the walleyes. The weather has been nice and the fish are biting. It is common to catch many walleyes between 14-18 inches with some nicer 19-25 inchers mixed in as well. Get out here and enjoy some of the best fishing of the year!!
