Man convicted of manslaughter in New Town stabbing

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- Jurors in Bismarck have convicted a man of manslaughter for the stabbing death of another man on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation.

The federal jury acquitted Waylon Hicks of the more serious offense of second-degree murder.

Hicks has acknowledged killing Jeremiah Sage of Halliday in July 2012 at the New Town Marina but he says it was self-defense.

Prosecutors say Hicks stabbed Sage in the heart multiple times and slashed his throat. They argued that Hicks had a hatred of homosexuals and acted violently because he was appalled another man would come on to him, not because he was afraid for his life.

Authorities found Sage's vehicle engulfed in flames, with his body inside burned beyond recognition.

Hicks will be sentenced in about three months.
