ND father convicted in dirty garage home case

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) -- A jury has convicted a North Dakota man of neglecting and abusing his two daughters by living in a garage attached to a home where his parents lived in squalor with dozens of animals and birds.

The jury acquitted 32-year-old James Hume of a similar charge involving a 7-year-old boy who is not his son but was in his care.

Prosecutors say sheriff's deputies found Hume living in a garage northwest of Reynolds with his 3- and 4-year-old girls, with no running water, hundreds of flies and hazardous conditions.

Hume faces up to 10 years in prison when he's sentenced Nov. 4. He also faces a separate terrorizing trial next month for allegedly threatening the person who alerted authorities about the garage living arrangements.
