Furness withdraws as NDUS chancellor finalist

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - One of the three finalists for interim chancellor of the North Dakota University System has withdrawn his name.

Former Fargo Mayor Bruce Furness said in an email to the State Board of Higher Education that although he thinks he can create positive change within the system, it's not the time to take on such a role.

Furness' decision leaves Larry Skogen, the acting interim chancellor and president of Bismarck State College, and Shane Goettle, a former North Dakota commerce commissioner, as the remaining candidates.

Board members hope to fill the position, which was vacated with the departure of the previous chancellor, Hamid Shirvani, at the Sept. 25 higher education board meeting in Bismarck.

The board bought out Shirvani's contract after months of turmoil over his leadership style.
