Minnesota Senators and Congressmen oppose reducing biofuel mandate

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Members of Minnesota's congressional delegate are opposed to the Obama administration's proposal to reduce the amount of ethanol in the nation's fuel supply for the first time.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Friday proposed lowering the biofuel targets for 2014.

U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken, and U.S. Reps. Tim Walz and Collin Peterson, all Democrats, say the proposal would discourage investment in the biofuel industry and hurt jobs and rural communities across Minnesota.

Klobuchar says she'll encourage the Obama administration to reconsider.

Peterson, the ranking Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee, calls the Renewable Fuel Standard ''vital to rural America's economic strength.''

The change would reduce by almost 3 billion gallons the amounts of ethanol and other biofuels blended into gasoline in 2014 than the law requires.
