Organizers submit petitions for minimum wage vote

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota Democrats and labor unions say they've gathered more than enough signatures to force a public vote on a minimum wage increase in the state.

Organizers of the petition drive say they're submitting nearly 26,000 signatures to the Secretary of State on Monday, the deadline to get the initiated measure on the November 2014 ballot.

Nearly 16,000 signatures need to be valid.

The measure would raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.50 an hour, set the tip wage to half the minimum wage and tie future increases to the cost of living.

The South Dakota Chamber of Commerce & Industry president says that ongoing increase would be hard on businesses and most heads of household make more than the minimum wage anyway.
