One of the four peregrine falcons hatched in May in a nesting box atop the Bank Of The West building in downtown Fargo is dead.
Marshall Johnson of the Audubon Dakota office in Fargo says the fledging falcon named Discovery was found in Island Park.
Johson says, "It's a sad thing but it's nature and these things happen. Mortality rates for both urban and rural nesting peregrines are, in the first year, very high...it's just the reality."
Johnson says the young raptor had only been flying about 3 weeks. The bird has been sent to a Wisconsin lab to determine what killed it. He says any number of factors could be the cause. West Nile has not been ruled out.
