A guard at the James River Correctional Center in Jamestown is hosptialized after investigators say he was "savagely" beaten by an inmate.
Highway Patrol Captain Bryan Niewind says Jerimiah McDonald was airlifted to Bismarck with severe head injuries following the sunday assault in a hallway as prisoners were allowed out of their cells.
The inmate, Shawn Ostafin, has a violent criminal history. He served a lengthy sentence for the 1990 murders of his father and stepmother and is now serving time for terrorizing. A year ago, he was disciplined for assaulting two staff members at the State Penitentiary in Bismarck.
Niewind says Ostafin will face charges in the latest assault.
